Invite Friends to Learn Thai, Both Earn Pro Time: StudyThai Referral Rules Explained
Learning a language alone is dramatically harder than learning with a friend. Grind solo for 3 days and nobody notices. Pair up with a friend and your day-30 retention is 2–3x higher than solo learning.
That's why StudyThai built a referral reward system: to turn "find a friend to learn with you" into something genuinely mutually beneficial rather than just a moral favor. The rules are simple, but there are a few critical limitations to clarify upfront — otherwise you'll think a referral counts when it actually doesn't.
TL;DR
| Trigger event | You (referrer) get | Friend (referee) gets |
|---|---|---|
| Friend signs up with your code (email verified) | +1 day Pro | New account |
| Friend buys yearly Pro | +30 days Pro (added to your current expiry) | Yearly Pro |
| Friend buys lifetime Pro | +30 days Pro (added) | Lifetime Pro |
| Friend buys monthly Pro | ❌ No reward triggered | Monthly Pro |
Critical limitation: Monthly subscriptions don't trigger referral rewards. Monthly user retention and unit economics differ — we only reward long-term commitments (yearly / lifetime).
1. Why Monthly Doesn't Count — And Why This Rule Actually Protects You
You might think: "My friend bought monthly and I got nothing?"
The logic:
| Subscription type | Long-term retention expectation | Reward logic |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | Most cancel within 2–3 months | No reward (referee likely churns) |
| Yearly | Significantly higher than monthly | +30 days for referrer |
| Lifetime | Permanent | +30 days for referrer |
If monthly triggered rewards, here's the exploit: A refers B to buy monthly (A gets reward), B cancels immediately — both arbitraged, but nobody is actually learning Thai. Blocking monthly preserves the long-term sustainability of the reward system.
A friendly tip: when you actually refer someone, just be upfront — "if you go yearly or lifetime, we both get 30 days Pro." Way better than tricking them into monthly and ending up both disappointed.
2. Important Fine Print
Rule 1: Each user can only be invited once (idempotency)
Friend A invited you and you already collected +1 day Pro. Friend B sends you their code later — clicking it won't trigger another reward. One invitation per account, ever.
Rule 2: Rewards stack, they don't max-out
If you already have 30 days of Pro, your friend buys yearly and gives you +30 → your Pro expiration extends by 30 days (you now have 60 days), it doesn't "take the larger value." Multiple friends inviting you means rewards genuinely stack.
Rule 3: Lifetime members auto-skip rewards
If you're already a lifetime Pro user, and a friend buys yearly through your code, the reward auto-skips — adding days has no meaning for you. Your code still works (your friend's discount is unaffected); you just don't accumulate days you can't use.
Rule 4: Codes are 8 characters, A–Z and 2–9 (no I/O/0/1)
Why exclude I, O, 0, 1? They're easily confused in different fonts. Our character set is ABCDEFGHJKLMNPQRSTUVWXYZ23456789 — 32 characters in random 8-position combinations, with a near-zero collision rate.
3. How to Find Your Invite Code
3 steps:
- Log into your StudyThai account
- Go to Settings → find the "Refer a Friend" entry (or open the referral dialog directly)
- The system lazy-generates an 8-char code + a short link on first request
Short link format: studythai.ai/r/[your code] — clicking auto-fills the referral code in your friend's signup form.
You can also manually copy the code for your friend to paste during signup — both paths produce the same result.
4. How to Pitch the Referral So Friends Actually Click
The least effective pitch we see: "Try this app so I can get a reward." Almost everyone declines.
Pitches our users have actually shown to work (sorted by effectiveness):
- "Didn't you say you wanted to learn Thai?" + short link — invokes a stated prior need
- "I've been using this for X days, you should try it" + short link — social proof from your usage
- "Yearly's cheap and we both get extra Pro time" — surfaces the reward transparently (not deception)
- "Try the 7-day free, no risk" + short link — emphasizes zero downside
Avoid: "Click this so I can get a reward" — pure ask-for-favor framing kills conversion.
5. Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Friend signed up but didn't use the app. Do I still get +1 day?
A: Yes. The reward triggers on signup completion (with email verification), independent of whether they actually engage. If they later refund a yearly subscription, the corresponding +30 reward gets handled accordingly (see Q5).
Q2: Can I create a second account for myself to farm rewards?
A: We run multi-signal detection (device fingerprint, IP, email patterns, etc.). Self-referral farming risks account bans. Don't.
Q3: Once used, can I keep sharing my code with more people?
A: Yes. Your code is a permanent ID — share with as many people as you want. Each new user signing up with your code triggers a fresh reward, as long as they weren't previously invited by someone else.
Q4: How fast do rewards arrive?
A: Signup reward: immediately after email verification. Purchase reward: triggered on successful payment (yearly/lifetime), typically within 1 minute. If 24+ hours pass with nothing showing, contact support to investigate.
Q5: My friend cancels yearly — do they take my +30 back?
A: Normal cancellations don't claw back rewards. But if your friend goes through a chargeback / formal refund, the corresponding reward gets prorated accordingly. This is to prevent refund-based arbitrage.
Wrap-up
The referral program's design philosophy is simple: make "find a friend to learn with you" genuinely mutually beneficial. It's not a "share to farm free Pro" trick — it's the real deal of "we both subscribe yearly, effectively each getting an extra month free."
